Green Gang

Shoreditch Town Hall has established a dedicated Green Gang to champion environmental sustainability across the organisation, comprised of members of the team.

The Green Gang has created a sustainability audit, a sustainability action plan and meet regularly to ensure accountability to the pledges. We have also updated our contracts and communication with all building users.

The Green Gang use the Theatre Green Book Building Survey and Standards Checklist to identify and implement sustainable practices.

They also work with external partners such as HEAL, Julie’s Bicycle, The Carbon Trust, and local initiatives like Hackney Light and Power.Maya - Events and Administration Manager

What we have achieved so Far

• Before 2026 we had raised £22K to spend on sustainability in our building and we can now confirm an additional £100K has been raised to spend directly on sustainable improvements from Arts Council England and Hackney Council.
• LED lighting project: We have changed all the lightbulbs in the building to LED to both future-proof the building and be more sustainable.
• New carbon efficient boilers with thermostatic controlled radiators that have reduced our bills so far by 30%.
• We have two green audits of the building to focus all our decision making on sustainable building upkeep.
• We are working with the Theatre Green Book as a guide.
• We have created posters displayed in all relevant rooms informing building users how to use the building sustainably, how to travel to work with the environment in mind, and reminding everyone of our commitment to becoming more sustainable as an organisation.
• We have updated and will to continue to update the contracts that we use with building hirers, to ensure they align with our sustainability policy.

Tenant: Renee Materials

Our Tenants Renee Materials reduces waste and cuts emissions on a large scale by offering businesses’ off-cuts, surplus stock, and leftover materials for reuse. They feature high-quality materials like paper, wood, textiles, leather, glass, metal, and yarn through their marketplace at Shoreditch Town Hall.

Renee Materials pay a reduced rent as we want to support their circular economy ethos and OurBike initiative.

OurBike with Renee Material

Our long-time tenant Renee Materials have recently started a partnership with OurBike.

OurBike is the UK’s largest community e-cargo bike share. Born in London and growing across the country, they exist to make everyday journeys easier, cheaper, and greener.

They believe transport should connect people, not pollute the places they live. That’s why every OurBike is:

• Powered by local people – hosted by trusted businesses, schools, and community hubs.
  Built for local journeys – designed to replace the car for school runs, shopping trips, deliveries, moving home, and days out.
  Shared by the community – affordable, accessible, and available on your doorstep.

OurBike is part of Peddle My Wheels, a London-based active travel company with a long history of supporting sustainable transport solutions and community-led initiatives.

Plans for the Future

On receipt of our recent funding of almost £900K from the government's Arts Everywhere Fund, we are planning the following:

• Adding secondary glazing to all our windows on the ground floor and some of the first floor windows.
• We will be adding insulation to our Assembly Hall roof to future proof our grand hall and reduce energy bills
