Many of the world’s most climate vulnerable states are spending five times more on debt than dealing with the climate emergency – even as these countries face floods and famines.

The debt crisis means that all around the world, from Senegal to Sri Lanka, Ethiopia to El Salvador, there are children who can’t go to school, hospitals that can’t offer people the treatment they need and homes that can’t be rebuilt when climate disaster strikes.

This is not an accident. For centuries, powerful governments, institutions and corporations have used debt to control and plunder the resources of countries in the global South for their own gain.

From colonial powers forcing countries into debt at the point of independence, to allowing corporations like BlackRock and VR Capital to continue to make huge profits from debt repayments today, we can’t fight today’s debt crisis without understanding its roots.

Led by campaiging organisation Debt Justice, this interactive workshop will explain the history of the colonial debt crisis, what it means for our wider movements, and how you can get involved with the fight for debt justice.

The contents of both workshops are the same, the longer workshop allows for more group discussions.
