Did you know we are a charity? Since its opening in 1866, Shoreditch Town Hall has witnessed everything from Victorian reform and Sylvia Pankhurst’s activism, to vibrant boxing matches, and the electrifying Whirl-Y-Gigs in the 90s. Each era has left its mark on this iconic building to make it the creative venue it is today, and now it’s our turn to care for its future.

Taking place in Shoreditch Town Hall's grand Assembly Hall, Hackney Singers’ Autumn Concert features a programme of moving and contemplative music.

The Hackney Singers has grown from strength to strength from its origins in 1973 as an evening class at Hackney Institute. Proudly cherishing its community roots, the choir – now 150-strong - puts on 3 or 4 concerts a year, often in Hackney venues, but also at the Royal Festival Hall!

Inspired by musical director Dan Ludford-Thomas, Hackney Singers will be joined by three exceptionally talented young musicians: mezzo soprano Niamh Kearney, baritone Alex Bower-Brown and organist James Orford.

The concert will feature Maurice Durufle’s uplifting Requiem of 1948 and John Tavener’s Song for Athene of 1993, famously performed at the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales in 1997, are joined by Jonathan Dove’s Seek Him that Maketh the Seven Stars, 1995, a setting of verses from the Book of Amos and Psalm 139.

The Line-Up joining Hackney Singers:

Niamh Kearney (mezzo soprano)
Former Next Gen Young Artist with Vox Urbane, the innovatory vocal ensemble founded by Helen Meyerhoff and Dan Ludford-Thomas, Niamh is currently choral scholar with Eltham Choral Society and recently joined Genesis Sixteen’s 2025/6 cohort.

Alex Bower-Brown (baritone)
With a wealth of experience as soloist and in professional choirs, Alex has performed throughout the world. Starting as a chorister at St John’s College, Cambridge, Alex is studying with a scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music, joining the Opera School in 2023.

James Orford (organist)
With numerous awards and prizes in his meteoric career, organist and pianist James has been heralded for his ‘dashing organ playing’. He brought out his debut solo album in 2021, and in 2023 collaborated with Alex Bower-Brown on a recording of English Songs. He was appointed Organist at St Paul’s Cathedral in 2024.
