Clod Ensemble and Nu Civilisation Orchestra will return to Shoreditch Town Hall with the Black Saint and The Sinner Lady on 9 & 10 November 2023. Find out more by clicking here.

Join Clod Ensemble and members of Nu Civilisation Orchestra for a new perspective on Charles Mingus’ big band masterpiece. In this digital event, you can experience a new way of listening to this wildly sensual, rhythmically explosive classic album by watching world class dancers move to the music, unlocking powerful elements such as its beautiful melodies, complex structure and huge emotional range.

We will be listening to the album in its original recorded format performed by Mingus and his band, with commentary from the  MOBO-nominated Music Director of Nu Civilisation Orchestra Peter Edwards, and Clod Ensemble Artistic Director Suzy Willson, which will be broadcast live from Shoreditch Town Hall. Audiences are invited to join online.

Featuring guest performances from residents of Shoreditch and Hoxton, as well as Hackney carnival arts organisation Tropical Isles, with dancers wearing collections from Hackney-based designers Simone Rocha, Eudon Choi and previous collaborators Art School.

The Black Saint and The Sinner Lady: Listening Party is part of a programme of events inspired by Charles Mingus’ 1963 masterpiece The Black Saint and The Sinner Lady, created in collaboration with Nu Civilisation Orchestra.

The Black Saint and The Sinner Lady is supported by Stanley Thomas Johnson Foundation, and by Hackney Council's Shoreditch and Hoxton Arts Fund, created from a levy on developers to support arts and culture programmes that bring different communities together.
