Ballet Queer invites you to take part in a one-off, open, and joyful movement workshop led by Ballet Queer’s Artistic Director Jonathan Watkins.

This unique session offers London based LGBTQ+ individuals the chance to explore movement, identity, and community in a safe and welcoming space - no formal dance training needed.

It is an opportunity to become part of Ballet Queer’s latest creation process, as they develop their first live performance, Some Queer History of Us, and this session is an invitation to explore and contribute to the themes that will shape this new work.

Using informal ballet practice, guided movement, and open dialogue, you will reflect on personal queer histories and collective experiences. Led by Jonathan Watkins (former Royal Ballet dancer, choreographer, and Ballet Queer founder) and another dance artist, the session will be about self expression and shared storytelling through dance.

“So beautiful to get permission to move freely again—particularly in queer community, in a time when we need community more than ever"
— Feedback from a previous participant

Who Can Join?
This workshop is exclusively for Hackney or London based LGBTQ+ participants, aged 18+, with no upper age limit. No prior dance experience is needed! Just an openness to move and explore together.

What to Expect
The workshop will include a warm-up and opportunities to interact and talk with other participants. You’ll be given different improvisation exercises, listen to music, and explore ways to respond to music with movement. The workshop is really a way for you to be inspired by your own experiences and move your body.

Access for All
Jonathan is experienced in adapting practical workshops to be available and accessible to all bodies, including participants who are disabled and chronically ill.
