Shoreditch Town Hall is thrilled to be launching a new Made in Shoreditch: Artist Workspace initiative, further supporting artist development and the creation of new live performance.
200 free desk space slots will be made available to artists in the Medium Committee Room and Small Committee Room every month, now extended to Monday 12 April – Friday 14 May 2021. Artists will be able to book socially distanced desk space for a day or week at a time, benefiting from a dedicated and safe communal working environment, interaction with other artists, and advice sessions with Town Hall staff.
Who can use desk space at Shoreditch Town Hall, and what for?
Any artist, creative or administrator of any discipline or art form can use desk space at Shoreditch Town Hall. You do not need to have an existing relationship with the organisation.
Desk space is available for administrative and desk-based work only, i.e. playwriting, design drawing, production planning, writing funding applications, project proposal and/or tour planning, marketing preparations, and so on. The initiative is not intended to provide studio space for practical exploration or making.
When is desk space available?
Desk space is available from 10am – 6pm, Monday – Friday from Monday 12 April until Friday 14 May 2021.
How many desks are available?
Up to 9 desks will be available at any given time.
What comes with artist desk space?
You will be allocated a desk measuring 151cm x 76cm, access to a 13amp plug socket, a desk lamp, and free WiFi.
Can I do printing whilst using desk space?
Yes, you will be able to do some printing. 20 double-sided sheets of black and white A4 printing will be given free of charge (for the entirety of your booking, not per day). After that, printing will be charged at 5p per black and white A4 side and 10p per colour A4 side.
Can I have post delivered to Shoreditch Town Hall?
Within reason, letters and small packages can be delivered to Shoreditch Town Hall in advance of your desk space booking. Post should be addressed for the attention of your full name, and must be delivered between 10am – 6pm, Monday – Friday. Please do not send any large packages to us.
Will I have access to tea and coffee?
Yes, basic tea and coffee making facilities will be made available in the spaces, although artists will be expected to bring and clean their own crockery. A pay what you can money box will be in operation to help contribute towards this.
Will I have access to basic stationery?
Basic stationery will be available from Reception as and when requested, and within reason.
Is desk space available in a private or communal space?
Desk space is only available in communal working areas: 5 desks in the Medium Committee Room and 4 desks in the Small Committee Room.
How are desks set up?
In order to adhere to the Town Hall’s Covid-19 Safety Measures, all desks face the wall and are spaced 2m apart.
Are the rooms in which desk space is offered accessible to wheelchair users?
Yes. The Medium and Small Committee Rooms are located on the first floor of the building which is accessible via lift and ramp.
How is Shoreditch Town Hall Covid secure?
Shoreditch Town Hall has a range of Covid-19 Safety Measures in place which can be found here. Further information will be sent to artists in advance of their first booking.
How are the desk space areas Covid secure?
All desks face the wall and are spaced 2m apart. Both rooms have windows which open to allow for natural airflow and ventilation. Hand sanitiser stations will be made available, and a one-way system through the two spaces will be in operation. Both spaces will be thoroughly cleaned every evening. All users of desk space will be expected to complete a Test and Trace questionnaire in advance.
How do I book artist desk space at Shoreditch Town Hall?
Please complete this Booking Form and one of our team will get back to you as soon as possible. Please note that our team will only respond between the hours of 10am – 6pm, Monday – Friday.
It is possible to allocate desk space at short notice, however we must have received your completed booking form by midday the day before the day your require a desk (or midday on Friday should you require space on a Monday).
How will desk space be allocated?
Desk space will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
What’s the minimum amount of desk space time I can book?
1 day (10am – 6pm).
What’s the maximum amount of desk space time I can book?
In order to ensure this initiative reaches and supports as many artists as possible, you can only book 5 days of desk space at any one time. This can be used all at once across 1 working week, or spread across 5 separate days over a longer period of time.
There must be a minimum of 2 weeks in between desk space bookings, i.e. once 5 days of desk space is complete, 2 weeks must have passed before desk space can be used again.
Is there any possibility of booking space for team or company meetings?
Should there be availability, the Small Committee Room can be booked as a meeting room for up to 4 artists for a day at a time.
What happens if I can no longer use my desk space booking?
You must give us at least 24 hours’ notice if you can no longer use the desk space you’ve booked so we can allocate the space to someone else.
What happens if I don’t turn up for my desk space booking?
We appreciate that things crop up and plans change, and so if you don’t turn up for your desk space booking then we will understand. However, if you re-book desk space and then don’t turn up a second time, you will no longer be able to book any further desk space at the Town Hall.
Do I have to pay anything to use desk space?
No, the initiative is free for artists to use. As noted above, a pay what you can money box will be in operation to support the purchasing of tea, coffee and milk etc., and any required printing beyond a certain amount will be charged for as well.
Is there any parking available at Shoreditch Town Hall?
Unfortunately there is no parking available at Shoreditch Town Hall.
Could I ever be banned from using artist desk space?
As noted above, we won’t process any further booking requests for you if you fail to turn up for your desk space booking on two occasions. You will also be prohibited from booking any further desk space if you cause any vandalism, damage, theft, or unnecessary disruption, and/or are disrespectful to other artists, Town Hall staff and/or other users of the building.
Will I get to spend time with members of Shoreditch Town Hall staff?
Each day a different member of the Town Hall’s core team will pop into the spaces for an informal discussion and basic advice session if required. More formal meetings with specific members of staff can be requested at Reception and will be scheduled based on availability. The Town Hall is a very small staff team and so capacity is limited, however we will always do our best to help and support.
