As a women-led venue, we are thrilled to be working with so many amazing women across our team and to be supporting a range of women-led works in our Spring programme this year. To celebrate Women’s History Month, we’re highlighting this team of fantastic women. Next up is Julie Flavell, our wonderful CEO!
What’s something people don’t realise about your job?
People don’t realise that I spend a lot of time being a landlord to the STH tenants!
What’s the most rewarding challenge you’ve tackled at Shoreditch Town Hall?
The most rewarding challenge I have tackled is closing the deal on the property lease re-gear which has enabled Shoreditch Town Hall to gain some funds for a capital project which includes the build of our brand new ramp outside the front of our building, due to be unveiled early April.
Describe a project or event you’ve worked on that means a lot to you.
Creating the Local Lounge project with the Cultural Programme team last year, enabling a diverse range of community groups to use our building for free has been very rewarding and worthwhile.
What’s a misconception people have about working in a venue like this?
It’s a very beautiful venue, but I don’t think people realise how much it costs per day just to keep the doors open with it being such an old venue with continual need of upkeep. All the money raised by holding commercial events goes back into running the building and the organisation and there is no regular grant funding, so we are always trying to balance the finances while allowing space for our brilliant cultural and community programme.
What’s one tool, trick, or hack you use daily to make your job easier?
My AI note taker enables me to fully concentrate in meetings and not worry about taking notes anymore, such a great tool!
What do you like to do when you’re not at work?
I like to spend time with family and friends and to relax I go outside to be in nature.

What’s your favourite Shoreditch Town Hall show/event have you attended?
My favourite show was Vamos Theatre‘s Boy on the Roof in 2024 but I loved the Summer in The Ditch season too last year.
What are you most looking forward to in our Spring Season?
I am most looking forward to the DARKFIELD takeover, DARKFIELD at The Ditch, seeing our underground space buzzing with people, and bringing yet another artform to Shoreditch Town Hall.
